Here is my take on directional lighting practice. I took a photo of myself to use as reference for my drawing. I drew the girl in fine liner and then scanned it into photoshop to easily experiment with lighting.
I gave the image base colours and then started with a highlight layer set to overlay. Drawing the highlight anywhere the light would touch. I designed it so that the light source was on the left, so the girl is facing it. I wanted to practice both faces in profile, as well as lighting on a person's face. I tried my best to remember the face's bon structure when highlighting, just as one would when applying makeup (highlighting where the light would naturally hit your face).
Personally I believe there are certain parts that are inaccurate/wrong, but I am happy with how it has turned out as I don't usually work in this way. I created a new overlay layer and created a gradient of light coming from the left. I think this finished off the piece nicely.
